Cuando Próspero es arrebatado de su posición como Duque de Milán por su hermano Sebastián y por Alonso, Rey de Nápoles, es expulsado junto a su hija Miranda a una isla remota. Doce años después, en un intento de venganza, levanta una tempestad mágica que hace naufragar al barco de sus enemigos en sus costas.

La isla también está habitada por el sirviente de Próspero, Ariel, un espíritu con poderes mágicos, y por Calibán, hijo deforme de una bruja, quien guarda resentimiento contra Próspero pues cree que él es quien debiera tener el poder en la isla. Por eso planea, junto a un acompañante del Rey Alonso, asesinarlo.

Tras la tormenta, Alonso cree que su hijo Ferdinando se ha ahogado y llora la muerte de su hijo mientras él conoce a Miranda y se enamora de ella profundamente. En su cueva, Próspero le concede su hija a Ferdinando, exigiéndole que guarden castidad hasta el matrimonio.

En el acto final, Próspero lleva a su celda a Alonso, Sebastián y todos los demás para revelarles su identidad. Perdona a sus enemigos y después revela que Ferdinando está a salvo con Miranda. Alonso le devuelve el ducado a Próspero y éste promete retornarlos a salvo a Italia.

“La tempestad es una de las mayores obras de Shakespeare. Parece ser un cuento de hadas, pero en realidad trata los más importantes asuntos humanos. Habla de cómo tan fácilmente nos hundimos en la amargura, la envidia. Y explica cómo sólo podemos superar estas maldiciones con gratitud y perdón. Próspero no es un hombre viejo y sabio. Él quiere controlar todo, retirado del mundo, aislado. Como todos nosotros. Su “isla” no es tan exótica cuando lo pensamos dos veces. Él siente mucha rabia y resentimiento, pero antes de salir de su prisión personal, debe aprender a perdonar y agradecer. Le resulta difícil. Cuando ha reunido a todos sus enemigos y está listo para cobrar su venganza, se detiene y le pregunta a su sirviente Ariel qué haría en su lugar. Ariel dice que los perdonaría… si fuese humano. Es un momento impactante. Esa la razón por la que Próspero es superior es superior al espíritu Ariel. Quizá no sea capaz de hacer magia, pero puede perdonar, ¡y ese es el mayor don que existe!” – Declan Donnellan.

En 1981, Donnellan fundó junto a Nick Ormerod la compañía Cheek by Jowl, que poco después se convirtió en una de las más importantes del teatro inglés contemporáneo. Desde 2006, este grupo ha sido parte del programa internacional de Barbican Centre.  A la fecha, Donnellan y Omerod han dirigido y diseñado más de 30 producciones para esta compañía que se ha presentado en más de 300 ciudades en 40 países. Su más reciente producción  en inglés es Tis Pity She’s A Whore, que actualmente está en gira mundial.

Para la Royal Shakespeare Company, Donnellan ha dirigido La escuela del escándalo, King Lear y Grandes esperanzas. Ha sido, además, Director Asociado del Royal National Theatre de Londres, donde debutó dirigiendo (por primera vez en inglés) Fuenteovejuna, de Lope De Vega, para después hacer Peer Gynt y Angels in America, de Tony Kushner.

En 1997, su producción de The Winter’s Tale para el Maly Drama Theatre de San Petersburgo, ganó el preciado Golden Mask Theatre Award. Al año siguiente, dirigió El Cid para el Festival de Aviñón.

En 2007 fue invitado por Peter Brook a formar su propio grupo de actores y crear Andromaque en el Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord. Este grupo continúa actuando, y su nueva producción francesa será Ubú Rey, de Alfred Jarry, la cual empezará a girar a comienzos de 2013.

En 1999, Valery Shadrin del Chekhov International Theatre Festival propuso a Donnellan y Omerod crear su propia compañía de actores rusos. Sus espectáculos incluyen: Boris Godunov (2000), Noche de reyes (2003, obra que trajeron en 2008 al Teatro Municipal de Santiago y al Municipal de Antofagasta), Las tres hermanas (2005) y La tempestad (2011). Estas producciones siguen teniendo funciones alrededor del mundo. Hoy, Declan Donnellan es presidente del Chekhov International Theatre Festival Fund.

Sus incursiones en otras disciplinas están marcadas por dirigir la ópera Falstaff, con Claudio Abbado, en Salzburgo; el ballet Romeo y Julieta en el Teatro Bolshoi de Moscú; y la película Bel-Ami, con Robert Pattinson y Uma Thurman.

Su libro El actor y la diana ha sido publicado en más de 14 idiomas. La versión en español fue publicada por Editorial Fundamentos y va en su cuarta edición.

Ha recibido premios en Moscú, París, Nueva York y Londres, incluyendo un Premio Laurence Olivier a sus Logros Excepcionales. En 2008 fue nombrado Caballero de la Orden de las Artes y las Letras por su trabajo en Francia. En 2009 compartió el Premio Carlomagno con Craig Ventner y el arzobispo Desmond Tutu.

Prospero is usurped from his position as Duke of Milan by his brother Sebastian and Alonso, the King of Naples. Together with his daughter Miranda Prospero was cast away to a remote island. Twelve years later, and intent to revenge, he raises a magical tempest that shipwrecks his enemies on his shores.

The island is also inhabited by Prospero’s servant Ariel, a spirit who has magic powers, and Caliban, an ugly sun of  the «foul witch» Sycorax, who deeply resents Prospero as he believes that he is the rightful ruler of the island. He plots with some of King Alonso’s company to murder Prospero.

Alonso believes his son Ferdinand was drowned and mourns for him. Meanwhile, Ferdinand meets Miranda and they fall deeply in love with Miranda. At the cave, Prospero presents Miranda to Ferdinand, though instructing him not to «break her virgin-knot» until after they are properly married.

Ariel rebukes King Alonso for his previous plotting against Prospero. More plots against Prospero are developed but they fail thanks to Ariel’s magic.

In the final act, Prospero brings Alonso, Sebastian and all the rest to his cell and reveals himself to them. He forgives his enemies and then reveals that Ferdinand is safe with Miranda. Alonso restores Prospero’s dukedom and Prospero promises to return all home safely to Italy.

Declan Donnellan was born in England of Irish parents In 1981 he founded Cheek by Jowl together with stage designer Nick Ormerod, and since then they have directed and designed more than 30 productions for the company, their first performances in Spain were Pericles in 1984 at Almagro and Madrid and A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Montevideo in 1985.

Cheek by Jowl has now performed in more than 300 cities in 40 countries. Their last production in English is «Tis Pity She’s A Whore» which is currently on a world tour. He has directed at The National Theatre of Finland, at The Old Vic, the Burgteater, and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

As Associate Director of The National Theatre in London his first wish was to direct the English language premiere of Fuente Ovejuna by Lope De Vega, which toured to Seville in 1991.Also at the National : Peer Gynt, and the European premiers of  Angels in America by Tony Kushner. His 1997 production of The Winter’s Tale for the Maly Drama Theatre, Saint-Petersburg, won the Golden Mask Theatre Award. The following year he directed Le Cid for The Avignon Festival. And in 2007  was invited by Peter Brook for form his own group of actors to create Andromaque at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord. This group continues to perform and their new French production will be King Ubu by Jarry which will start to tour early in 2013.

In 1999 Valery Shadrin at the Chekhov International Theatre Festival invited him and Nick Ormerod to create their own company of Russian actors. Their performances include: Boris Godunov (2000), Twelfth Night (2003), Three Sisters (2005), and The Tempest (2011). These productions continue to be performed across the globe.

Declan Donnellan is the President of the Chekhov International Theatre Festival Fund. His book The Actor and the Target has appeared in many languages, including Chinese. He has received awards in Moscow, Paris, New York and London, including the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement. In 2008 he was made a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his work in France. In 2009 he shared the Charlemagne award with Craig Ventner and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
