“As far as impossible”, that is our motto.

The firm belief throughout our twenty-year history that we shall continue to fill streets and playhouses with the magic of the theater. We have witnessed the recent history of Chile firsthand, and we have become a part of it thanks to the participation of the country’s citizenry.

From January 3-20, 2013, we shall celebrate the twentieth Santiago a Mil International Festival, with France as our guest of honor, sharing in a single goal: to make our governments, opinion formers, and citizens see culture and the arts as priority issues.

Over our twenty year history, France has been well-represented, with 16 street, theater, and dance productions by such renowned companies as Generik Vapeur, Groupe F, Théâtre du Soleil, Salamandre, Abc Dingue, and Transe Express.

The 2010 festival culminated with the performance of La Invitación. The return of Pequeña Gigante together with Tío Escafandra made a great impression on the three million Chileans who witnessed their previous wanderings and subsequent meeting. It also made its mark on public opinion, as part of Chile’s Bicentennial celebrations, affecting Chileans’ passion to be a part of world class spectacles and to take ownership of public spaces.

In the words of the French Ambassador to Chile, Marc Giacomini, the country’s relationship with the festival over the years has been of great significance. “We are hugely honored, and it is the fruit of close cooperation between Fitam and the French Embassy that we have been invited as guests of honor for the twentieth anniversary festival”, he explained.

On this occasion, as we celebrate our twentieth anniversary, it has been our aim to launch the first tranche of our international program in public space, offering a free entry event together with the music of Ana Tijoux and audiovisual projections by Delight Lab at the site that is our official headquarters for the third year running, the Centro Gabriela Mistral.

“Twenty years of ceaseless work has certainly been a feat, but we have managed it. The public can trust us to put on this festival every January, come rain or shine”, says Carmen Romero, the executive director of the Fundación Teatro a Mil.

“In 2013 (…) we have made a tireless effort to bring together great directors and companies that are receiving ovations in Europe, North America, Oceania, and Latin America, and to restage the best shows by well-known and emerging Chilean companies, all over a three week period”, she explains.

The first information released on the Twentieth Santiago a Mil International Festival’s international programming has revealed that participants will be arriving from 14 countries in Europe, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas: France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Poland, Russia, Canada, the United States, Colombia, Brazil, Peru, China, and New Zealand.

María Olivia Recart, VP for External Affairs at BHP Billiton – which operates the Minera Escondida mine – adds that “we are proud to be celebrating these two decades of Santiago a Mil, a festival that we have presented for each of the past twelve years of its history”.

The festival is to celebrate its twenty-year history, and its presentation of an impressive total of over 1000 Chilean productions during the period.

Your Festival, our history

This is a birthday to celebrate, not only for the festival itself but also for those who have been a part of it.

We invite you to share your stories and memories, in the “Twenty years, one thousand stories” section of our website.

Productions at the Twentieth Santiago a Mil Festival

This first set of foreign productions includes 18 works, including theater, dance, and street theater.

Theater

• Le centaure el l’animal

For the first time in Latin America, it is our pleasure to present a French experimental work of equestrian theater, directed by world famous trainer Bartabas, who directs the Zingaro company. In this production, the horses play a lead role. Animal and man are melded together in a composition in which mastery over the body and butō dance, choreographed by renowned master Ko Murobushi, transport the audience into a fascinating and worrying world.

• Shakespeare: The Tempest / Hamlet

This Tempest is a Russian production, directed by Declan Donnellan and performed by the Russian cast of the Cheek by Jowl company.

Meanwhile, The Wooster Group is bringing its innovative version of Hamlet to Santiago, from its home in New York. The production, directed by Elizabeth LeCompte, combines live acting with images from the Broadway production of the 1960s, which starred Richard Burton.

• The far side of the moon

A true master of contemporary theater is visiting us from Canada. Robert Lepage and his Ex Machina company will be coming to Chile for the first time, with The far side of the moon. This is an autobiographical work by Lepage, filled with warmth and delirium, where two brothers try to deal with the death of their mother and overcome their own personal frustrations. Since its premiere in 2000, this one man show has been touring the world, and in 2003 it was made into a film, also directed by and starring Lepage.

• Jerk

Franco-Austrian director Gisèle Vienne this year brings us Jerk, a puppetry piece with a gore aesthetic telling the tale of the serial killings perpetrated by Dean Corll, better known as the “Candyman”.

• Dies irae_5 episodi intorno alla fine della specie

Italy brings us this vision of the self destruction of humanity, with the Teatro Sotterraneo’s piece Dies irae_5 episodi intorno alla fine della specie

• Pendiente de voto

Spain is bringing this work to the festival, directed by Roger Bernat, with the aim of transforming the playhouse into a parliament where the audience has the right to use a remote control to vote on what will happen on stage, in this “on-stage democracy”.

• Latin American representation: Discurso de un hombre decente / La ciudad y los perros

The first confirmed guests from Latin America will bring with them two high-impact productions: Discurso de un Hombre Decente will visit from Colombia, a co-production between Mapa Teatro and the Fundación Teatro a Mil, directed by Heidi and Rolf Abderhalden. The work, which premiered in March 2012 at the Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro de Bogotá, brings to the stage a fictional discourse found in the pocket of Pablo Escobar’s shirt on the day he was killed.

Meanwhile, Peruvian director Edgar Saba is bringing a staging of Mario Vargas Llosa’s La Ciudad y los Perros (released in English translation as The Time of the Hero), commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of the writer’s first novel. When the play opened in Madrid in 1982, its cast included Antonio Banderas, in his acting debut. Its 2011 restaging in Lima, Peru, has met with similar success.

Public space

Once again, the streets of Santiago will be one of the festival’s leading dramatic spaces. Audiences will take ownership of public spaces to become lost in the five works that will be performed throughout the city.

• Les giraffes / Les roues de couleurs

From France will come these insightful productions by the Compagnie OFF. The street theater piece Les Giraffes will star circus artists, live opera, pyrotechnic effects, and – most astonishing of all – towering magenta giraffes parading through the streets. Meanwhile, the work Les Roues de Couleurs features six giant spheres suspended over the city, creating the atmosphere of a street party, playing with and mixing sound and images.

• Dominio público

Catalan director Roger Bernat will also be taking to the streets, with his piece Dominio Público (Public Domain). This will be an interactive game played with spectators, who will immerse themselves in Bernat’s experience so as to understand how they themselves are the narrators of this tale, and that it is their own life story that will take the fore.

• El tiempo de las madres

This Polish multimedia piece is to be presented by Teatr Ósmego Dnia. After their successful performance of Arka in 2008, this company is to return with a new piece that paints a portrait of a mother’s gift of being able to give life to her children, and her suffering when she sees them taking each others’ lives in war.

• Romeo y Julieta

The acclaimed Brazilian group Compañía Galpão returns once again to Chile, this time with Gabriel Villela as guest director. In January 2011 they garnered ovations and critical success with their production of Till, the saga of a picaresque hero; now they are back, with a reimagining of the tale of Romeo and Juliet. This production has been so successful that it was even selected for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Dance

• Salves

Santiago a Mil is also about dance, and this year we reaffirm our commitment to showcasing world class contemporary choreography. Our twentieth anniversary celebrations will kick off with a work by one of France’s leading avant garde choreographers, Maguy Marin, who is returning to Chile to present Salves, which has been acclaimed worldwide as a masterpiece.

• Travelogue I – Twenty to eight

Leading German artist Sasha Waltz returns to Santiago a Mil once again, this time bringing the original work Travelogue I – Twenty to eight – which, like our festival, this year celebrates its twentieth anniversary. Humor, aggression, and sensuality intermingle in this piece, in which the objects of daily life become poetic symbols of the social structures that we impose upon ourselves.

• Birds with skymirrors

Oceania will once again bring a valued contribution, with this work by renowned Samoan choreographer Lemi Ponifasio with dance troupe MAU, who use this piece to put forward reflection on the relationship between humans and the Earth. The work takes as a starting point Ponifasio’s experience on a Pacific island, watching birds carrying what seemed to be mirrors in their beaks – but were in fact fragments of magnetic tape that they had gathered from the ocean. The beauty and ceremony of the dance are used to create a visionary theater work, where the choreographer lays bare the forces in conflict in the environmental catastrophe that the planet is facing.

• Beijing Opera – Essence of the Chinese culture

In what has become a tradition, once again we reconnect with the mysteries of China through a show that brings traditional music, dance, and opera, under the title Beijing Opera – Essence of the Chinese Culture. This work, by the Nanjing Repertory Theater, places one of China’s most beloved legendary heroes, Mu Guiying, on the stage.

Special events

As a way of breaching the divide between the stage and the audience, the Santiago a Mil 2013 Special Events Program seeks to being the theater experience to spaces for dialogue, reflection, and practice, through meetings and workshops alongside the stars. With the participation of renowned national and foreign guests, the creators, fans, and the general public will have a chance to participate in a wide variety of free activities.

Chile: Window on the world

Santiago a Mil is celebrating its twenty-year history. These have been two decades dedicated to promoting the performing arts in Chile among the public at large, and a unique opportunity to enliven dialogue on international creative work. It is as part of this very dialogue that the Santiago a Mil 2013 Program Directors’ Week will take its place as one of the most significant platforms for bringing Chilean and Latin American theater to the world.

From 14 to 19 January, program directors for theaters and festivals from a large number of countries will touch down in Santiago to take part in the 2013 offering of the Santiago a Mil International Festival Program Directors’ Week.

With the dual aims of promoting circulation and generating new exhibition spaces for the Chilean and Latin American performing arts in other regions, the Santiago a Mil Program Directors’ Week is a space for interchange, in parallel with programming, that brings theater companies into contact with the program directors for the world’s leading theaters and festivals.

In the regions

We retain our firm conviction in the value of decentralizing cultural activity, moving beyond the bounds of Santiago to bring works to Iquique and Antofagasta with our festival’s extension program. We also want to go even further with our tradition of taking to the streets to give these public spaces back to the people, turning around the city’s routine.

During coming weeks, we will unveil more Latin American program entries – in particular, groups from Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina – as well as Chilean works to be included, and a few more surprises that we have in store.
