Desde su creación en 1994, el Festival Internacional Santiago a Mil ha logrado transformar el mes de enero en una fiesta ciudadana y democrática donde las artes escénicas son las protagonistas. Este año se cumplirán 20 años de historia, dos décadas en que se han programado 949 espectáculos, de los cuales 220 corresponden a creaciones internacionales y 729 a obras nacionales, que han abierto y consolidado un espacio por excelencia para la exhibición de los montajes que han marcado las artes escénicas de Chile.

Entre el 3 y el 20 de enero se celebrará una nueva edición del Festival Santiago a Mil que, bajo el slogan En la medida de lo imposible, marca la convicción de seguir adelante y darle un espacio significativo a las artes escénicas del país.

Para Carmen Romero, Directora Ejecutiva de Fundación Teatro a Mil, “en estos 20 años hemos ganado entre todos un espacio de libertad que debemos alentar y cuidar. Empezamos con la convicción de que lo que para muchos parecía imposible, se podía lograr, y esa idea nos impulsa hasta hoy. Empezamos admirando a los grandes festivales del mundo, y ahora vemos cómo el mundo tiene los ojos puestos en nosotros y en el teatro chileno”. “La programación internacional que tendremos para nuestro vigésimo festival es de lujo, y la nacional no se queda ni un paso atrás. Cuatro jurados especializados revisaron en un año 157 espectáculos de teatro y danza, para llegar a una selección que reúne los 20 trabajos más potentes, contemporáneos, fascinantes y conmovedores. Estamos ansiosos por compartir con el público lo mejor de las artes escénicas nacionales”, agrega.

Por su parte, María Olivia Recart, Vicepresidenta de Asuntos Externos de Minera Escondida (operada por BHP Billiton) repasa la relación y compromiso que han sostenido con el festival. “Nuestra participación en Santiago a Mil ha sido una excelente experiencia, beneficiosa en muchos sentidos, en que ambas partes hemos aprendido mucho. A lo largo de trece años, hemos acompañado al Festival en su desarrollo y lo hemos visto crecer exponencialmente. Ha crecido en programación de obras nacionales, variedad y calidad de espectáculos internacionales, cantidad de funciones gratuitas en comunas, extensión geográfica y, ciertamente, en público. Asimismo hemos contribuido al fortalecimiento y proyección del teatro nacional”, sostiene.

En 19 ediciones se estima un público asistente de  8 millones de personas, una cifra que traspasa números y constituye parte fundamental de esta fiesta ciudadana. Sobre el alto impacto que el certamen teatral tiene sobre las personas, el Ministro Presidente del Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes, Luciano Cruz-Coke, señala: “en estos 20 años del Festival Santiago a Mil las familias chilenas han podido acceder a los espectáculos teatrales más importantes del mundo y a obras fundamentales del teatro nacional. Gracias a su extensión en diversas regiones del país y en comunas con población más vulnerable, grandes y chicos y personas que nunca antes habían asistido a una función de teatro han disfrutado experiencias y emociones únicas. Nos alegra ser parte de esta iniciativa y reconocemos cómo ha ido transformándose en un referente activo de la escena teatral chilena e internacional».

Organizado por la Fundación Teatro a Mil, el Festival es un proyecto acogido a la Ley de Donaciones Culturales que presenta Minera Escondida (operada por BHP Billiton) y cuenta con el apoyo del Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes. Por tercer año consecutivo su sede principal será el Centro Gabriela Mistral.

Talento local

El Festival Internacional Santiago a Mil será una nueva ocasión para reunir a los mejores exponentes de las artes escénicas del mundo y lo más aplaudido de las tablas nacionales. A los 18 espectáculos internacionales, se sumará una destacada programación local de 24 producciones que, como todos los años, vendrá a nutrir el Festival con la calidad artística que tienen los dramaturgos y directores chilenos, las compañías, sus actores y los equipos técnicos.

Esta programación es producto de un exhaustivo proceso de selección a cargo de un jurado independiente, integrado por profesionales de las artes escénicas, la docencia y las comunicaciones, que entre el 1 de septiembre 2011 y el 6 de septiembre de 2012 visionó 157 montajes (teatro y danza), los cuales cumplían el requisito de ser estrenos formales en la cartelera de Santiago con un mínimo de 12 funciones y de contar con un elenco compuesto por profesionales.

Las categorías que conforman la programación nacional del Festival Santiago a Mil 2013 son: Selección Teatro 2012, Teatro Emergente, Teatro Familiar y de Calle, Selección Danza 2012, Danza Emergente, Selección Regiones 2012 y Coproducciones. De esta manera, la novedad en la programación es la incorporación de obras de categoría familiar y una selección de teatro de Antofagasta, Valparaíso y Concepción, que se presentarán en las extensiones que el certamen realice en dichas ciudades.

Siguiendo con la línea de promoción de las artes escénicas, la cual busca contribuir a la descentralización de la cultura en Chile y a mejorar la calidad de vida de sus habitantes, el Festival Internacional Santiago a Mil celebrará sus 20 años incluyendo por primera vez obras de la región del Biobío, de Antofagasta y de Valparaíso en la programación. Since its founding in 1994, the Santiago a Mil International Festival has succeeded in turning January into a civic and democratic festival where the performing arts take the lead. This year the festival turns twenty – two decades in which it has presented 949 productions, 220 of them international alongside 729 Chilean works, first creating and then consolidating a space for excellence in exhibiting the stagings that have made a mark on the performing arts in Chile.

From 3 to 20 January this year’s Santiago a Mil festival will go ahead, under the slogan As far as impossible, showing our conviction to carry on into the future, and to provide a key space for the country’s performing arts.

In the words of Carmen Romero, Executive Director of the Fundación Teatro a Mil, “over these 20 years we have worked together to forge a space marked by freedom, that we must encourage and take care of. We began with the conviction that we could achieve what many thought to be impossible, and that is the idea that continues to drive us on. We started through our admiration of the world’s great festivals, and today we can see how the world’s eyes are on us, and on Chilean theater”. “The international productions featuring in the program of our twentieth festival are world class, and the Chilean productions that we are presenting are certainly able to hold their own in such company. Four specialized juries have reviewed 157 theater and dance productions over the course of a year, to select 20 of the most powerful, contemporary, fascinating, and moving works. We have a thirst to share the best of the Chilean performing arts with the public”, she adds.

Meanwhile, María Olivia Recart, VP for External Affairs at the Minera Escondida mine – operated by BHP Billiton – is keen to talk about the mine’s relationship and commitment to the festival. “Our participation in Santiago a Mil has been an excellent experience that has brought a wide range of benefits, with both parties learning a great deal. Over the course of the past thirteen years, we have stood alongside the festival’s development and we have watched it grow exponentially. It has expanded in terms of the Chilean works presented, the variety and quality of foreign productions, the number of free performances in different districts of the city, its geographical scope, and certainly in the number of people who attend. We have also contributed to the strengthening and dissemination of Chilean theater”, she says.

Audience figures over the 19 festivals so far completed have totaled an estimated 8 million people, going beyond mere numbers and constituting a fundamental component of a public festival. Talking about the theater contest’s impact on the public, the Minister in Charge of the National Council for Culture and the Arts, Luciano Cruz-Coke, says: “over the 20 year history of the Santiago a Mil Festival, Chilean families have had access to the world’s leading stage productions and to highlights from the country’s theater. Thanks to its extension program’s work in different regions of the country and in districts with more vulnerable communities, the young, the old, and people who had never before been able to go to the theater have enjoyed unique experiences and emotions. We are pleased to be a part of this initiative, and the recognize how the festival has transformed itself into a recognized highlight of the Chilean and international theater scene”.

Organized by the Fundación Teatro a Mil, the festival is a project that falls within the scope of the Law on Cultural Donations, presented by Minera Escondida (operated by BHP Billiton) and supported by the National Council for Culture and the Arts. For the third year running, its main headquarters will be located at the Centro Gabriela Mistral.

Local Talent

The Santiago a Mil International Festival will be a new chance to bring together the leading lights in the global performing arts, and Chile’s billboard stars. Alongside the festival’s 18 foreign productions, the program will include 24 Chilean shows that – just as has been the case in previous years – will come to nourish our festival with the artistic quality that Chilean playwrights, directors, companies, actors, and technical teams possess.

This program has been assembled through an exhaustive selection process spearheaded by an independent jury featuring members from the performing arts world, academics, and communications professionals who, between 1 September 2011 and 6 September 2012, took in 157 theater and dance productions that fulfilled the requirements of premiering as professional stagings in Santiago with at least 12 performances and a cast made up of professionals.

The categories that make up the Santiago a Mil 2013 domestic program are: Theater 2012, Emerging Theater, Family and Street Theater, Dance 2012, Emerging Dance, Regional Productions 2012, and Co-productions. Thus, the new feature in the program is the incorporation of family shows and the inclusion of theater from the Antofagasta, Valparaíso and Concepción regions, to be presented at the contest’s extension program in those cities.

REGIONAL PRODUCTIONS 2012

In line our work to promote the performing arts, seeking to foster the decentralization of cultural events in Chile and to improve the quality of life enjoyed by the country’s inhabitants, the Santiago a Mil International Festival is to celebrate its twentieth anniversary by including – for the very first time – works form the regions of Biobío, Antofagasta and Valparaíso in its program. The selection process was spearheaded by representatives of the Santiago a Mil 2012 Festival Jury and by leading figures in local cultural communities.
